ROBERT E. LEE Paddle Wheeler 1870Kit

The first highways of North America were the great rivers which permitted the growth of commerce. The goods were loaded on enormous rafts which were floated down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, to be delivered to the great city of New Orleans.
The advent of steam and the brilliant idea of Fulton and Livingstone, permitted the up stream navigation of these rivers. Paddlewheels were positioned at the stern or at each side and driven by enormous steam engines. the quest for more speed inspired competions.
One of the most famous races took place between the Natchez and the Robert E. Lee. In 1870 these two vessels raced between New Orleans and St.Louis, a distance of 750 miles. The Robert E. Lee won the race covering the distance in 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes.

#180-932-2 Block hull construction
An unusual find and to our knowledge only two side paddle wheeler kits in production; the other being the Mount Washington (which we also carry). A good choice for a modeler's first or second model. The hull is constructed of solid pine. Many of the other wooden parts such as the smoke stacks have been pre-carved in birch. To give added detail a sheet of photo-etched brass parts gives your model additional eye catching detail.
