In 1780, the American privateer Rattle Snake was launched from Plymouth Massachusetts. Despite her moderate size of 89 feet, she was fast and seaworthy. Her crew consisted of 85 men and she carried 20 six pounders.
She was so successful at preying on English merchant traffic that the British government demanded she should be captured or sunk at any cost. In 1783 the Rattle Snake was overcome by the 44 gunship HMS Assurance and inducted into the Royal Navy.
